Ménière's Disease

Many people are familiar with ringing in the ears (tinnitus), but fewer realise it can also be a symptom of Ménière's disease—a chronic inner ear disorder characterised by episodes of vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus and a feeling of fullness in the affected ear.

I recently learned more about Ménière's disease and was surprised by how significantly it can affect a person's daily life.

While it affects an estimated 2 in 1,000 people in Western populations, its prevalence in Asia is around 40 per 100,000 people. It most commonly affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60, although it can occur at any age.

During an episode, even walking safely can become difficult. It is a reminder that conditions not immediately visible to others can still have a profound impact on a person's quality of life.

Beyond medical treatment, living with Ménière's disease often requires understanding from family members and caregivers.

The uncertainty of when an episode may occur can be just as challenging as the symptoms themselves.

To the healthcare professionals caring for individuals living with Ménière's disease, thank you for helping patients navigate a condition that is often unseen by others.
